(211-0549) Professor of climate-smart and nutrient-efficient agriculture

Professor of climate-smart and nutrient-efficient agriculture
Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences (PLEN), Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen invites applications for a permanent position as Professor in the area of climate-smart and nutrient-efficient agriculture from September 1st 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Research
Climate change and perturbation of global biogeochemical flows of nitrogen and phosphorus have been identified as two of the most important threats to ecosystem stability and human life at global and local scales. Soils and agriculture are key components in global greenhouse gas balances, and there is a need to reduce emissions from agricultural activities, specifically from cropping systems, fertiliser use and land use change, whilst ensuring production to meet global demands for food and feed.

To address these major challenges Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences wants to appoint a Professor of climate-smart and nutrient-efficient agriculture. With point of departure in ongoing research within the Plant and Soil Science Section, the position will focus on processes and controlling factors for greenhouse-gas and nutrient emissions as well as carbon sequestration in soils and cropping systems. Potential mitigation strategies such as new and improved cropping and fertilisation strategies as well improved land use should be addressed. Furthermore, the professor should be able to lead work on upscaling of results from field to farm and regional scales, using e.g. modelling and impact assessment methods, and integration into sustainability assessment approaches. Agroecosystems in focus could include conventional intensive, high-input as well as low-input or organic farming systems in various climatic zones, not limited to the Danish context only.

Key candidate selection criteria
The professor must have an academic standing showing internationally competitive research, and an internationally recognized high potential to make a future impact. The candidate should have demonstrated ability to assemble consortia and develop project proposals successful in achieving funding, and should have sufficient project leadership experience. Profound abilities to establish strong networks with relevant research and stakeholder groups (national and/or international) are considered very important qualifications.

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Teaching areas to be covered include, but are not limited to, greenhouse-gas and nutrient emissions, carbon storage in soils and cropping systems, land use change, mitigation strategies, upscaling using modelling and impact assessment methods, and integrating these into sustainability evaluation.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

The Plant and Soil Science Section at Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences covers fundamental and applied studies of plant-environment interactions and soil processes, which are fundamental drivers for development of climate-smart and resource efficient agricultural systems for sustainable production of food, energy and biomaterials. Our research fields include soil fertility, plant nutrition, molecular plant breeding and plant defense genetics.
